Are There Any Side Effects to Acupuncture?
After an acupuncture therapy session you will be advised to rest and drink extra water. Most people feel very relaxed and energised after an acupuncture treatment. Sometimes, although rarely you may experience a small bruise where a needle was inserted. If however you experience any pain, swelling, dizziness, difficulty breathing, or large bruises, after an acupuncture treatment, you should advise your practitioner or doctor immediately.
How long is a Treatment Session?
Usually treatments are scheduled for 1 hour. At the start of the treatment session there is a consultation interview to discuss your problems or progress (for returning patients).
If This is Your First Visit
You will meet with your clinic professional practitioner for an in-depth conversation about your signs and symptoms and your comprehensive health history. You may be asked some questions about your diet, exercise, and lifestyle.
Upon completion of the consultation the acupuncture needles are placed and patients lie comfortably for 25-35 minutes. Many patients find our therapy sessions relaxing and even fall asleep.
Undressing is seldom necessary for acupuncture treatments but you should wear loose, comfortable clothes.
At the end of the treatment, your intern clinic practitioner will discuss your treatment plan, which includes any herbal formulas you may receive, nutritional advice, and the plan for your continuing acupuncture treatments.
How many treatments do I need?
Every person is different and has a different ailment requiring acupuncture. The number of treatments depends largely on severity of the medical problem and how long someone has had it. Typically if acupuncture is going to work for a patient they should start to notice the benefits within the first 3-6 treatments.

Are There Any Reasons Why I Should Not Be Treated with Acupuncture?
Although there are no contraindications to having acupuncture or any other TCM treatments, there may be certain circumstances or conditions that may make it advisable to postpone a treatment to a later date. Certain conditions may mean that certain acupuncture points or treatments are cautioned or contraindicated, in such cases your acupuncture treatment will be adjusted accordingly.
If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, please notify your acupuncturist before commencing any treatment. Most acupuncture points are safe to use during pregnancy, but there are a few points that are avoided as a precaution.
